Two successive UN Special Rapporteurs on extrajudicial killings, summary or arbitrary executions, have said that use of drones by the US for targeted killings violate international law. Christof Heyns, the current UN special rapporteur said in Geneva last week that the US drone warfare threatens the regime of international law built up over the last 50 years.

It is now clear that the no-fly zone has been expanded in Libya to a military campaign for a regime change, something that the UN Security Council did not authorize. Gaddafi’s residence in Tripoli has been bombed and more strikes are taking place in Tripoli and other towns. The argument of course is that Gaddafi’s residence is a military target as it has a command and control centre – a fig-leaf to argue why Gaddafi can be targeted anywhere.

The western powers feel that the Libyan people need to be protected from Gaddafi – therefore the need for a no-fly zone over Libya and military strikes killing not only Gaddafi's forces but also civilians. If they are to be believed, this has nothing to do with oil, only humanitarian impulses that govern the enlightened west!
