Algerians celebrate as president Abdelaziz Bouteflika resigns

Tens of thousands of Algerians have hit the streets to celebrate the resignation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on April 02, 2019.The 82 year-old President had been facing massive protests for months after he stated his intention to run for fifth term in the upcoming general elections. His regime has been marked by increasing social inequality and rising unemployment due to the neoliberal economic reforms. The country had taken a path of privatisation and liberalisation under President Houari Boumédiène, which increased the disparity between rich and poor.
