The Indian National Congress (INC) has become a non-influential force in Tamil Nadu, since the past few years. The number of seats the Congress won in the last Assembly election substantiates the party's weak position. According to Vijaya Sankar, editor of Frontline magazine, the inbuilt factionalism within the party organisation, accompanied by a leadership crisis in the state has led to the decline of the national party.
