Stephen Lakra from Adivasi Students’ Union alleges that it is a political game to obstruct Adivasi tea garden workers’ progress.

In conversation with Newsclick, Bibek Das from joint action committee of Assam Tea Workers’ Union points out that the tea garden workers have been deprived for years of their basic rights like the minimum wage. He says that PM Modi had met and assured the tea workers before the 2014 elections, and had promised uniform minimum wage across states. However, he has failed to fulfil his promise, says Das.

Stephen Lakra from Adivasi Students’ Union alleges that it is a political game to obstruct the Adivasi tea garden workers’ progress. They are paid meagre wages so that they and cannot pursue higher education, and continue to offer their services in tea gardens, he alleges.
