The unorganised sector associated with the Surat textile industry is dying a slow death with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The closure of over 60% of the 650,000 power looms in the district, a loss of Rs 900 crore, thousands of workers have lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. 

Spread out in weaving, spinning, dyeing and processing, trading and garment jobs, through 20,000 manufacturers, it includes powerlooms, 75,000 traders and 150 wholesale textile markets.
