In the 70 years since India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire after hostilities for 15 months, much of the Hindutva narrative within the country has centered around demonising Jawaharlal Nehru and blaming him for all that is wrong in this country today, especially the crisis in Kashmir. The only way to verify or negate these claims is to gather more facts about what really happened at that time. In this episode of Present, Past and the Future, Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay talks to RTI activist Venkatesh Nayak about his attempt to verify some facts about the history of Kashmir through an RTI he recently filed requesting access to papers, dating from 1947 to 1949, which may prove to be crucial to understand Nehru’s role in the 1947-48 Kashmir crisis.
