The Supreme Court has stayed the notice issued by the Tamil Nadu Assembly speaker to three rebel Members of Assembly (MLAs) of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The apex court has sought an explanation within four weeks from the office of the Speaker regarding the notice issued. The complete detail of the interim verdict is awaited.

The opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and two of the three MLAs who were served notice by the speaker had moved the Supreme Court last week. Earlier, the DMK had submitted a no confidence motion against the Speaker to prevent any further disqualification of MLAs which will bring down the strength of the house. The disqualification of the MLAs effectively mean that the ruling party needs lesser number of victories in the by-election to the 22 Assembly segments.

The MLAs are said to have claimed that they are still members of AIADMK in their affidavit to the apex court and stated that they have not been involved any anti-party activities.

The AIADMK chief had submitted a demand to disqualify the three MLAs for siding with the splinter group Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam led by TTV Dhinakaran.

The interim stay is being seen as a set back to the ruling AIADMK. With the by-election results to be announced on May 23, along with the parliamentary elections results, the internal squabble within AIADMK is all set to deepen in spite of the final verdict of the case.
