During the last leg of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) election campaigning, at least 50-100 members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday ran amok on the premises of Delhi University's Zakir Hussain College, wielding sticks and raising slogans, and breaking flowers-pots and furniture, allegedly because they were denied entry by the college security guard for the election campaign inside the campus.

Shakti Singh, a vice presidential candidate from the ABVP for the Delhi University Students Union polls along with his hundred party members entered inside the campus and damaged university property just because he was not allowed to enter inside the camous with his hundreds of campaigners. A alumini of the same college told that only four 'bonafide students' are allowed with one candidate and Shakti was entering with almost hundred students, most of them were not in fact 'bonafide' students. This was the main reason they created chaos and hooliganism and 'ransacked university property'.

Delhi University Students' Union will go to election on Wednesday. Students in both the campuses would vote to elect their representative for the academic year 2018-19.  Delhi university is one of the biggest and most reputed higher education spaces in India.

Students’ Federation of India (SFI) also condemned the incident and said yesterday's violence was not an isolated case of violence, rather they are using the continuous use of violence as their political tool to instil fear among students.

Speaking with Newsclick, Vikas Bhadauria a law student of Delhi University and president of SFI Delhi said, " Shakti Singh was also involved in a similar case of violence last year in Zakir Hussain where he physically assaulted students. This year also he tried to enter the college with his over 100 supporters who were apparently not even bonafide university students. University rules clearly state that only 4 students are allowed along with the candidate for the campaign, when the college authorities and guards tried to stop them, they assaulted the staff and entered the college forcefully with sticks and batons in hand. They vandalised the college property, assaulted the women students who came their way, threw flower pots on the common students. All this happened when the police officials were there, and a PCR was stationed outside the college. They also damaged a car parked outside the college.

He further added that two days before these people (ABVP) were involved in a serious case of violence in Deshbandhu College where they assaulted common students. A day before they assaulted SFI activists in PGDAV and Sri Venkateshwara college.
