Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Newsclick

Newsclick pays its tributes to the great writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez who passed away on April 17, 2014, at the age of 87. His novels are acknowledged as masterpieces not only in their own countries but all around the world. He won the Nobel prize for literature in 1982.

García Márquez always emphasized that the writer had a public duty to speak out on political issues. His own views were strongly Leftwing, opposed to what he saw as imperialism, particularly with regard to the domination of Latin America by the US. That is why for many years, despite being one of the best-known writers among the reading public, he was denied access to the United States.
