President Obama's recent visit to India has received a lot of attention from the press. Apart from the Civil Nuclear Liability deal, some of the other key agreements were Joint Strategic Vision for Asia Pacific, defence, and development of clean energy, etc Newsclick interviewed Prabir Purkayastha of Delhi Science Forum, to discuss these issues and whether if it is in India's best interest to be seen in such proximity to the U.S. According to Prabir, U.S policy of a pivot to Asia has been in the offing for some time. With this Joint Strategic Vision statement, India will have to be seen to have joined the US -- Japan axis and becoming a part of the US containment of China policy. This will reduce India's strategic space and make India a subordinate ally of the US. This is not in India's interest. The US seems to have conceded nothing in return except providing some loans for India buying American equipment. The Obama visit provided some photo-ops for the PM, but has delivered little to the country.
