THE START

The first phase started with Anna Hazare and his team sitting on fast against corruption. They presented the Jan Lokpal Bill to the government and the people, maintaining with tremendous support from the across the country, that this should replace the apology of a legislation framed by the UPA government. The peoples response compelled the government to set up a committee of Union Ministers to dialogue with Anna Hazare and his team for a workable legislation.

When the Anna Hazare story started – back in April, when Anna and his four emerged out of the woodworks with the tall promise of ridding India of corruption – many of us were skeptical of his “movement”. Despite our reservations, legitimate and relevant as they are, the fact is that his campaign managed to tap into a perceptible mass anger against the corrupt practices and malfeasance of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. In the process the people at the receiving end of spiralling prices and pervasive corruption are being treated to the sight of a yoga guru fleeing from the police in women's dress, breaking down and crying in front of the media a day later, and still not being explain why he could not survive nine days of a fast when ordinary mortals across the world do it for health or religious reasons for weeks at a time.

It is not surprising when the individuals fighting against corruption are subjected to a campaign of slander and vilification. Obviously, those who deal with filth, would use it to try and malign others. The message is clear – if you want to fight corruption, the corrupt will try and drag you down to their level.

Anna Hazare's fast on the Jan Lokpal Bill has touched a chord in the people – the outpouring of support that has come from all corners of the country and amongst different sections is a testament to this. It is clear that we as Indians are simply tired of knowing that scams are happening on an ever increasing scale and we are unable to do anything about it. It is this helplessness that is building up the anger which is now being reflected in the wide support that Anna Hazare's fast has received.
