The World Social Forum 2013 kicked off this year on 27th March with tens of thousands of people marching through the heart of Tunis.

The savage murder of Chokri Belaid, one of Tunisia’s progressive political figures, brought over a million Tunisians onto the streets of Tunis and other cities for his funeral held on 6 February 2013. The General Workers Union(UGTT) called for a strike, the first in more than thirty years to coincide with the funeral. Tunisians ponder who will be next after such a political assassination?

Ahdaf Soueif is the author of the bestselling The Map of Love (shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1999 and translated into 28 languages). She is a writer and political and cultural commentator, and has also initiated the Palestine Festival of Literature (PalFest) in 2008. Soueif talks to Newsclick about the recent political events in Egypt, PalFest, and writing.
