Zelaya Returns to Honduras -- Military Planning to Storm Brazilian Embassy

Newclick, September 27

The President of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, deposed by a military backed coup in Honduras, returned to the capital city of Tegucigalpa after 2 days of travelling through the mountains and countryside. He and 85 of his associates have taken shelter in the Brazilian Embassy, which has been barricaded by the military. His supporters were dispersed with water cannons and rubber bullets.

The world media, which ran a high voltage campaign on the violation of democracy in Iran, has fallen into a strange silence on the blatant violation of democracy in Honduras. The top Honduran military lawyer told the Miami Herald in July this year, "It would be difficult for us, with our training, to have a relationship with a leftist government. That's impossible." Clearly, a coup planned by the military generals trained in the US Army School for Americas (now renamed as Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation or WHINSEC), and against Zelaya, who was close to the Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, is not news.
