From May 1, International Workers’ Day, safai karamcharis (sanitation workers) of the Delhi University have been protesting against the sudden termination of their contracts by the university administration. This move has left hundreds of workers unemployed. The workers, who were earlier employed on contractual basis by an NGO called Sulabh International, are agitated not just by their sudden dismissal, but also because of the lack of basic employment benefits such as provident fund or Employees State Insurance. This has prompted them to file a case in labour court against Sulabh International, following which many of them were dismissed from their jobs without any prior notice.
