International Workers Day: A Day of Struggle, A Day to Resolve to Struggle

Urdu poet Jaun Elia's poem "Ailan-e-Rang" is based on the workers' general strike that took place in Chicago on 1 May 1886. It was this struggle which resulted in the eight-hour work day. The struggle to implement it across the world still continues, which is why the poem resonates even today.

Elia's poem portrays that historic day which served as the foundation of the modern workers' movement. The Chicago strike is still remembered by workers' unions across the world, and is a source of inspiration for those fighting for a world free of exploitation.
