MP Govt to Shut Vyapam Recruitment

Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh Congress government is all set to rename the infamous scam-tainted Vyapam aka MP Professional Examination Board to Rajya Karmchari Chayan Aayog (State Staff Selection Commission) within the next 15 days, Chief Minister Kamal Nath has said.

Talking to media persons in his native district Chhindwara, the CM said, “Vyapam is a symbol of BJP scams in the state. The government has decided to close down the department and a new department named Rajya Karmchari Chayan Aayog will replace it.”

The Rajya Karmchari Chayan Aayog (State Staff Selection Commission) will be the new body to be entrusted with the task of recruitments for the state government jobs.

Citing the reason for renaming Vyapam, Public Relation Minister PC Sharma said, “The new set up will be responsible for direct recruitment of staff to the state services with transparency. Vyapam has brought disgrace to the state with scams in medical admissions and job recruitments where more than 50 people lost their lives, while those responsible for the scam are still on the run. Besides, students from MP had been facing disapproval while appearing for exam or job interviews outside the state on account of Vyapam scam. Hence, it is better to scrap it.”

This is not the first time, the state government had earlier also tried to bury Vyapam. In August 2015, during the BJP regime, then CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan had also decided to adopt a fresh nomenclature for ‘Vyapam’ for ‘positivity’ by renaming Vyapam as ‘MP Professional Examinations Board’ (MPPEB). This was following the deaths of students who were named in the scam had begun to haunt the BJP government as well as officials.

During a specially convened meeting of MLAs in August 2015, Chouhan had suggested the renaming saying, “The name Vyapam is disgraceful and is bringing dishonour to the state and the party. After renaming, Vyapam will be buried forever and a recruitment board will come into effect.’’

In 2013, large-scale irregularities were unearthed in Vyapam or PEB, which conducts entrance tests for medical and technical colleges in the state, besides holding recruitment tests for different cadre of employees in the state government. Following this, the then BJP government had formed a special investigation team and later handed over the probe to CBI.

After investigation, the CBI chargesheeted 86 persons in February 2018, including then Technical and Higher Education minister, Laxmikant Sharma; then controller of PEB, Pankaj Trivedi; principal system analyst in Vyapam, Nitin Mohindra; and 72 candidates.
