Security in Jammu to be Enhanced Within 3 Months, Says Amit Shah After Review Meeting

Srinagar: Ten days after suspected militant groups targeted several families in Rajouri’s Dangri village, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the region on Friday and announced that security in all of Jammu would be further strengthened within the next three months.

Shah held a review meeting with all security agencies including Jammu and Kashmir Police, Border Security Forces and Central Reserve Police Force and Indian Army. He was expected to visit the families of the victims of the Rajouri attack but could not meet them due to bad weather. He, however, spoke to the families on phone expressing his solidarity with them.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader also held a detailed review meeting where all aspects of security were discussed with all major agencies responsible for the safety and security of the region, especially in Jammu.

“All of our intelligence agencies have also expressed that they will further heighten their action and tighten their grip. I am sure that in the coming days the police will zero-in on the perpetrators and bring them before the courts. The action plan to secure Jammu division is time bound and we have decided today that within three months security in all regions will be further strengthened,” Shah said.

Ten days ago, suspected militant groups targeted several families in Rajouri’s Dangri village, about 11 km from main Pir Panjal town, killing at least four and injuring a dozen others. The next day three more civilians including two minors were killed in an IED blast near the spot injuring more in what was considered a major attack in years in the border area.

The attack was seen by many in the security agencies as an escalation in the violence aimed to flare up areas outside the Kashmir valley especially in the South of Pir Panjal Range.

The Home Minister confirmed that investigation of the two incidents in Rajouri’s Dangri have been handed over to the National Investigation Agency.

He, however, refuted claims that the Union Territory authorities were arming civilians to strengthen the Village Defence Committees in the wake of the latest attack.

“The government of India had already decided in August to strengthen the Village Defence Committees and it should not be connected with the incident,” he said.
