AIDWA Demands ‘Sternest’ Action Against ‘Brutal Murder’ of Woman in Kashmir

The incident triggered multiple protests in parts of Budgam, including Ompora, and a candlelight march was held in Soibugh on Monday.
Stop Violence Against Women

New Delhi: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has demanded the ‘sternest’ action against the brutal murder of a young woman in Budgam, Kashmir.

The woman had gone missing on March 7 after she left for her computer training class. Police said that on March 8, Tanveer Ahmad Khan of Soibug Budgam submitted an application to the Police Post Soibug, stating that his sister left for the coaching classes on March 7 but didn’t return home, according to reports.

Police said that a missing report was registered and the investigation started. Several suspects were rounded up, including Shabir Ahmad Wani, son of Abdul Aziz Wani of Mohandpora, Budgam. After sustained interrogation, Shabir confessed to having murdered the missing girl, as per the police.

Police said that the culprit had cut her body into pieces and buried them at different locations.

The incident triggered multiple protests in parts of Budgam, including Ompora, and a candlelight march in Soibugh on Monday.

On his disclosure, the body parts were recovered and the police arrested 45-year-old Shabir Ahmad Wani.

“We have recently seen other cases of brutal murders of women shocking the nation. This is one more such incident where the culprit has cut the body parts into pieces and buried them at various places. With his disclosure, they have been able to uncover these body parts,” AIDWA’s press release reads.

The Budgam murder is a grim reminder of the gruesome murder case in Delhi, where a man had killed his live-in partner, chopped her body into more than 35 pieces and dumped them in the jungles of Mehrauli.

AIDWA has demanded that immediate protection be given to the family of the victim and severe action be taken against the perpetrator of the brutal murder.

Full Press Statement:

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) strongly condemns the brutal murder of a young woman in Budgam (Kashmir). On 7 March, Arifa Jan went for coaching class but failed to return home. Her brother lodged a missing report with the police on 8 March. The police interviewed several suspects and after sustained interrogation, one Shabir Ahmad Wani of Mohandpora Budgam confessed to the murder of the missing girl.

We have recently seen other cases of brutal murders of women shocking the nation. This is one more such incident where the culprit has cut the body parts into pieces and buried them at various places. With his disclosure they have been able to uncover these body parts.

The macabre nature of this killing has shocked society. People in various areas, particularly locals, have staged protest demonstrations and demanded harsh punishment to all the accused in the crime. A delegation of the Women’s Association of Kashmir visited the bereaved family and has condemned the brutal incident. They have sought exemplary punishment for the perpetrators of such a heinous crime.

It is disheartening that on the day the rest of the nation was celebrating ‘International Women’s Day’, such atrocities continue unabated. We are witnessing frequent incidents of crimes against women with kidnapping, rape and unimaginably cruel murders. The BJP government at the centre ignores these heinous crimes indirectly encouraging violence against women.

AIDWA will hold protests and demands that immediate protection be given to the family of the victim and severe action be taken against the perpetrator of the brutal murder.
