Peaceful Protest Outside Ramjas College, North Campus, DU
ABVP goons got violent during a protest outside Ramjas College today. Faculty and students were attacked. Media persons got beaten up as well, including 2 reporters from Newsclick. One of our cameras was also broken.
English department of the college, along with Wordcraft - the Ramjas Literary Society - had organised a two-day seminar exploring representations of dissent. Umar Khalid was one of the speakers yesterday, on 21st February, 2017. ABVP students vandalised the event, objecting to Umar Khalid’s presence. They surrounded the seminar room and locked up the faculty and students forcing a cancellation of the event.
After ABVP’ vandalisation of the seminar, a protest was called today by students and teachers of Ramjas. The march was to reach the Maurice Nagar Police Station, demanding action against ABVP’s hooliganism.
To add to further goonism, ABVP - a student organisation of the RSS – got violent again today. They shouted slogans, calling the protesters “anti-nationals”. They hit the protesters –students and teachers alike- along with the people from the media. Some of them are badly hurt, including Dr. Prasanta Chakraborty, from the Department of English of DU, who was admitted in Hindu Rao hospital.
