In this interview with NewsClick, development economist Dr Santosh Mehrotra explains the findings of the recent Periodic Labour Force Survey, which says that unemployment has declined. In reality, unprecedented numbers of people, especially women, are working without any income or salary. The burden on Indian farms has grown, as people who left villages reverse-migrated from cities, where they didn't find jobs or adequate wages. The hardships concentrate in states that are net contributors to migration, namely, UP, Bihar, MP, and the rest of the 'Hindi belt'.
