City Sense: Sustainable Traffic Solutions Through Better Public Transport, Not Wider Roads

More often than not, building more flyovers or widening roads are accepted as the given solutions to this problem. But do these work?

Traffic is one of the major concerns faced by cities across the world. More often than not, building more flyovers or widening roads are accepted as the given solutions to this problem. But do these work? In this episode of City Sense, Shimla's former Deputy Mayor Tikender Singh Panwar talks to Professor Geetam Tiwari from IIT Delhi about transport and the idea of mobility in the urban Indian spectrum. Professor Tiwari argues that building a better public transport system is the key to tackling not only the mobility concerns but also the carbon emissions. She emphasises the need to choose sustainable transport options more but points out that what people want is influenced by what kind of soft and hard infrastructure is created around them.
