Durand Cup 2021: FC Goa Beat Wasteful Army Green 2-0

FC Goa had to fight hard for their 2-0 victory over Army Green Football Team in their Durand Cup match at the Vivekananda Yubabharati Krirangan (VYBK) in Kolkata on Tuesday.

Alberto Noguera Ripoll (35’) and Devendra Dhaku Murgaokar (59’) sealed the win for the Indian Super League (ISL) side in Salt Lake. The scoreline, however, doesn’t do justice to the way Army Green played, They created a host of chances but failed to convert them.

Army Green almost scored in the 15th minute, when a cross from VikasZanje took a deflection and almost caught Goa keeper Naveen Kumar off-guard. The woodwork saved Goa.

Juan Ferrando’s side were far more clinical when opportunities presented themselves. In the 35th minute, a beautiful through-ball from Goa’s Makan Winkle Chote put Alberto Noguera through on goal and the Spaniard slotted it home.

In the 59th minute, Devendra made it 2-0 for the Gaurs after Romario Jesuraj found him inside the box with a great delivery.

It was one of those days for Army Green, who did everything on the pitch they would have wanted to except for scoring. 

On Monday, Jamshedpur FC defeated I-League side Sudeva Delhi FC 1-0 at the Mohun Bagan Athletic Club Ground on Monday. The ISL side successfully held on to their solitary goal lead, which was nicked by one of their academy graduates, Lalruatmawia in the 34th minute.

FC Bengaluru United’s (FCBU) campaign in the Durand Cup began on a winning note against Central Reserve Police Force Football Club (CRPF FC) at the Kalyani Stadium in Kolkata. The teams had their chances through the game, but FCBU held their nerve in all the right moments to emerge triumphant.
