The private institutions are a major threat for affirmative actions.
Newsclick talked to Professor Sukhadeo Thorat, Chairman of ICSSR and former chairman of UGC. We talked to him about the attack on higher education. The UGC guidelines on the number of students a faculty can take, does not align with the spirit of our education policy. Universities like JNU, DU have many vacancies for faculty positions. Instead of taking in more teachers, the UGC circular aims to cut down seats. The government is trying to bring in policies to try and privatise education. There is a need to include reservation in private educational spaces as well.
