Greater Need for Advancing Agriculture in Asia

Senior Researcher at the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC), Sylvia Mallari, talks to Newsclick about the agrarian situation in South East Asia. Mallari notes that land has remained at the core of the question of agriculture in the region. Emphasizing the fact that 60% of world's population lives in Asia, she underscores the need for advancing and developing agriculture in the region. She talks about the Mindanao region in Philippines where women have taken to organic farming, rejecting big agro-chemical industries and the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Mallari notes that APC along with like-minded global organizations works for the Right to Food and Food Sovereignty and fights the incursions of transnational corporations and pesticide organizations.
