Hindu Succession Act 1956: What Does it Say About Women's Rights?

The Supreme Court, in its latest decision, has settled the question of the coparcenary right of daughters in absence of their fathers. The court ruled that daughter’s rights to her fathers’ property are absolute, free of any condition. However, experts point out that despite such laws, the number of women landowners remains low as compared to their male counterparts, an issue that can be traced back to the Hindu Succession Act.
