The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has on January 11 terminated more than 700 sanitation workers under the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) without prior notice even though they are frontline warriors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Out of 15 zones in the Chennai Corporation, seven have been handed over to a private company for solid waste removal. After this, to reduce the existing manpower, the GCC management fired the sanitation workers. The workers are continuing their protest along with the Red Flag union against the termination. NewsClick reached out to understand their problems.
