The Union government had passed an act in 2006 to ensure adequate caste composition in the admissions to higher education institutions like IITs, IIMs and the central universities. But the data collected by the IIT-Madras students shows that reservation is not fulfilled in the above universities. In this interview, G. Karunanidhy, general secretary of All India Federation of Other Backward Classes, says that inadequate faculty members in higher education institutions has become a major hurdle for the students from marginalised sections pursuing their studies. He also says that the New Education Policy by the Modi-led BJP government will further marginalise these students, including those from minority communities.
