“Making the National Anthem Compulsory in Cinema Halls is a Call to Violence”

Cultural theorist Sadanand Menon explains the implications of the Supreme Court judgement
Interview with Sadanand Menon
Interviewed by Indian Cultural Forum

Indian Cultural Forum spoke to Sadanand Menon, cultural theorist and commentator, at Tepantar Theatre Village, located in the village of Satkhania, Burdwan. Each time there is an attack on freedom of speech and expression, we rush to the courts as a means of refuge. A thriving democracy cannot operate in this manner, he said. He also discussed the Madras High Court judgement in favour of Perumal Murugan, and called it a step ahead from the Delhi High Court judgement, which was in favour of the painter, M.F. Hussain. Watch the video below, to hear him explain the difference between the two judgements — the former an being 'order' and the latter a 'ruling'.
