Speaking at the Idea of India conclave, Achin Vaniak called the emergence of Hindutva nationalism as a threat to democracy.  This form of nationalism caters to a population which believes in the idea of India divided on religious lines. The rise of Hindutva politics through outfits such as the Sangh Parivar was cited by Vanaik as source of merging nationalism and subsequent militarisation with religion.
