More than 10,000 slum-dwellers in Chennai are facing severe hardship after their eviction and resettlement by the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board in the past two decades. Several have lost their regular income and are not even eligible for welfare measures due to no ration cards. Additionally, they are facing problems in commutation as well as a lack of safety measures in the places of resettlement. The continuous lockdowns have added to their hardships. NewsClick presents a ground report from the resettlement colonies in Perumbakkam. Vanessa Peter, a policy researcher at the Information and Resource Centre for the Deprived Urban Communities (IRCDUC), also comments on the issue.
