Human rights lawyer Nandita Haksar explains the genesis of the Naga independence movement and the importance of the NCSN(I-M) ongoing talks with the Indian government. A resolution is important to the Naga issue, she tells NewsClick, but first the history and the complex nature of the demand has to be understood. This is not just a matter of Nagaland insurgents putting down arms, which is how the Indian state sees it, Haksar says. It is a matter of what kind of future is being created for the Nagaland people, its' neighbours in the northeast, its women, rural folk and the poor. Right now, none of these seem to be the agenda.
