Shamli: After Riots, Comes Demonetisation

Shamli hasn’t quite recovered from the communal violence and now demonetisation has added salt to the wound.

It has been a month since the chaotic process of demonetisation began. More than 100 people have lost their lives in this last month. The Muzaffarnagar belt is majorly dependent on the agriculture. But because of demonetisation they have lost their market as there is virtually no cash flow in the economy. Nakul Singh Sawhney of the ChalChitra Abhiyaan spoke to several farmers of Shamli district of Western Uttar Pradesh to understand how demonetisation has affected their farming. While shooting he was confronted by right wing activists who came charging at the camera claiming everything was functioning well. It didn’t take any time for the rest of the villagers to collectively counter them and expose the real situation in the bank.
