Syriza’s Victory: A New Hope for Europe

Newsclick Interviewed Prof. Aijaz Ahmad on the recent elections in Greece, where Syriza, a left party, has to come to power. Aijaz feel that this unprecedented change, where a left party with clear left agenda has won such a victory, is the consequence of the brutal austerity measures taken by the previous government. He said that the new government faces a tough challenge in terms of how much they can bargain with the Troika, particularly Germany, without losing their support base. The EU has the reverse problem -- how much can they relax the terms they have set for Greece without losing their credibility and yet retain Greece within the EU. He also felt that while the external challenge is more difficult, they can implement their domestic program relatively easily, providing some relief to the people.. Aijaz suggested that this victory could have an enormous impact on the neighboring nations, particularly Spain where elections are in the offing.
