Tea Plantations Make Big Profits, Workers Get Pittance
Unable to bear the harsh work conditions and poor pay, a large number of tea estate workers have quit work and migrated to the plains over the past few years. Last year the Tamil Nadu government increased the minimum wages for plantation workers, but private estates are not implementing it. A trade union is waging struggles for better work conditions, but the administration is countering them by dividing the workers and harassing union members. Neither the labour welfare board nor politicians have intervened so far.
