TN: Job Insecurity Results in Unionisation Among Amma Kitchens
Amma Unavagam, the much appreciated subsidised community kitchen scheme in Tamil Nadu, was initiated by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in 2013. Since then, 650 such canteens throughout the state have been deteriorating due to inadequate support from the government. The workers feel insecure about their jobs. This has resulted in the formation of the first workers' union in a canteen in Valparai, a hill-station in Coimbatore district. Their basic demand is to regularise their employment. NewsClick presents a ground report about its visit to the canteen in Valparai.
