Transgender Bill 2019 Confines Us to Mere Bodies, Say Activists

Since the introduction of the Bill in 2016, the legislation has come under heavy criticism from transgender rights activists.

The Transgender Persons’ (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019, was passed in Rajya Sabha on November 25 and the Bill was sent to the president amid widespread protests from the transgender community across the country. Since the introduction of the Bill in 2016, the legislation has come under heavy criticism from transgender rights activists. The Bill, according to the activists, denies the right to self-determination and has many other crucial lacunae. The community as a whole, now, is urging the president of India to send the Bill back without signing it.
