Unnao Rape Case: Sengar’s Loyalists Refuse To Speak Out

Saurabh Sharma |
The villagers are still in support of the accused BJP MLA, and the number of people who used to stay at Sengar's estate has remained unchanged.
Unnao Rape Case

Uneasy calm prevails in Makhi village after the body of Yunus Khan was exhumed and again buried at night on August 25.

Yunus Khan was the key witness in the assault case of the victim's father in the Unnao case and he had died under mysterious circumstances on August 18. The cremation was done without informing the police and later on August 20, a written complaint to the police was made by the victim's uncle alleging that Yunus Khan was poisoned by the associates of the accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

The Makhi villagers still do not believe that Yunus Khan was a CBI witness. No one in the village had any clue about it because he had been a regular at his grocery shop, and had never been seen with the police or any other person from outside the village.

Shyam Sunder, a villager who lives besides Yunus's house said that a useless controversy was being stirred up by the victim's family over the death.
"Every person in the village very well knows that Yunus was ill, and he died a natural death due to his liver and lung problems. How could he be a CBI witness when he never stepped out of this village, and a small interrogation or cross-questioning does not make anyone a key witness in the case," says Sunder.

Sunder, a Sengar loyalist like other Makhi villagers further said that the postmortem was done by exhuming the body against the will of the family, and also against the will of the villagers.

Postmortem Fails

According to a highly placed police official, no cause could be revealed in the case of Yunus's death and there were no antemortem injuries in his bodies.
"The viscera has been preserved and it will be sent for chemical and histopathology analysis on Monday. The DNA has also been preserved watching the sensitivity of the case," the officer said.

It may be mentioned that the prime investigative agency has yet not written any letter to the Uttar Pradesh police in connection with this death.

However, according to Additional Director General (ADG) of UP Police, Anand Kumar, the investigative agency has been kept in the loop and is being informed about every step being taken by the police in the case.

"We have informed them about all the developments and it seems they are satisfied because the police department has yet not received any written complaint from the CBI and it can be considered that the CBI has no objections to the actions being taken by us," Anand told media persons on Sunday night.

Yunus's brother Jaan Mohammad had earlier said that he had found Yunus dead in the house where he lived in Makhi village on the morning of August 18, and buried him without reporting and having an autopsy conducted.

The deceased was 32 years old and was running a grocery shop near the survivor's home.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar and five of his associates including brother Atul Singh Sengar, were arrested in April, in connection with the rape and brutal assault on the victim's father who died under judicial custody on April 9. The rape survivor had also attempted to kill herself in front of the CM’s residence in Lucknow last April after her father was arrested.
