Eminent historian Mridula Mukherjee says that while the role of RSS as an organisation in the assassination is not clear, there is little doubt that the killers were linked to the RSS and Savarkar was guilty of conspiracy. What should be remembered that there was a plan to create a condition of near civil war through communal riots just after independence. Mahatma's assassination was a part of this bigger plan. It was the peoples revulsion to Gandhi's killing and the strong action taken by Nehru and Patel that defeated this plan.
