Lal Chand Ali, a shopkeeper in a village in Assam's Barpeta district, committed suicide when he discovered that his name had appeared in the list of D-voters – doubtful voters. The onus was put on him to prove that he was a bona fide citizen of India. His family asks: What was his crime? To be poor? To be Muslim? How can the rest of India be complicit in this extreme marginalisation of Bengali Muslims and Hindus in Assam – all in the name of National Register of Citizens?
