Will Untouchability Make a Return?

The practice of 'Untouchability' which is prevalent in the Indian Sub-continent has been outlawed in India with the adoption of the Indian Constitution. But this practice is still prevalent and manifests in varied forms. Even with the people acquiring education their mind set is still caught in the notions of purity and pollution. Newsclick talked to Dr. Amit Thorat about his study on untouchability, it was in the context of the government officials in UP handing out soaps and shampoos to the Dalits before the Chief Minister's visit to their areas. In his study it is observed that 'Untouchability' which is an all India phenomenon, declines as we go down the South. This is due to the progressive movements that struggles against caste discrimination.
