The elderly women of the semi-settled Gujjar community at Pathra in the upper reaches of South Kashmir's Pulwama district are striving to keep the tradition of wearing traditional headgears alive. Initially, all Gujjar women would wear these beautifully designed handmade skull caps, adorned with red-coloured fabric, as part of their traditional attire. However, the younger generations are showing less interest in the rich traditions and the art of making these skull caps is fading away which has hit the livelihoods of many in the tribe.
