The Common Alternative Revolutionary Forces (FARC) political party announced on November 4 that it had signed a four-point agreement with the Colombian national government that guarantees the implementation of the peace agreements signed between the former government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group, in Havana, Cuba, in 2016.

“We reached four commitments with the Colombian Government thanks to the Pilgrimage for Life and Peace: meeting with President Iván Duque, land for reincorporation, security guarantees and comprehensive implementation of the peace agreements,” stated the FARC party in a tweet.

The agreements reached yesterday between the two political forces are the result of the Pilgrimage for Life and Peace. Hundreds of ex-combatants of the FARC began the pilgrimage, on October 21, from the Mesetas town in the Meta department to the capital city Bogotá to demand that the national government comply with the peace agreements. This weekend, over 2,000 former guerilla fighters from different parts of the country, along with several human rights defenders and social activists who joined them in the course of their journey, reached Bogotá. On Sunday, November 1, they held a peaceful demonstration at the Plaza Bolivar, demanding cessation of the murders of the former combatants and respect for their right to life. Thereafter, they stayed in the capital city, continued their peaceful mobilization and demanded to meet with the president.

Yesterday, November 4, a team of government officials met with the representatives of the FARC party that emerged after the disarmament and demobilization of the guerilla group, heard their demands and signed the aforementioned peace commitments.

“We thank the 2,000 people who made the pilgrimage and those who resist in the territories, the people who accompanied us in the streets and cities. Social mobilization is the best way to achieve changes and the best guarantor are the Colombian people,” wrote the FARC in another tweet, thanking all the citizens for their support for peace.

The presidential adviser for Stabilization and Consolidation, Emilio José Archila, and the senator of the FARC, Pastor Alape Lascarro, reported that president Duque will meet the representatives of the pilgrimage this Friday, November 6.

Since the signing of the peace agreements, 237 former FARC combatants, who were in the reincorporation process, have been killed. According to the Institute of Development and Peace Studies (INDEPAZ), 52 of these ex-combatants and peace signatories were assassinated this year between January 1 and November 4.
