Following the directives of the Election Commission (EC), the Delhi Police on Saturday, April 27, registered a case against him for holding an election rally without taking permission, a police officer said.

East Delhi Electoral Officer K. Mahesh on Saturday asked the police to take action against cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir for rallying in Jangpura on Friday without permission and violating the Model Code of Conduct.

"We have registered Delhi Police (DP) Act against Gautam Gambhir and are taking action against him under Non-Cognizable Report," Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal said.

Gambhir is the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from the East Delhi Constituency.

This is not the first time that Gambhir has landed in a controversy. Previously, Aam Aadmi Party’s star candidate Atishi had filed a complaint against him for being allegedly enrolled as a voter in two Assembly constituencies- Karol Bagh and Rajinder Nagar, which fall under the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency. She had alleged that this violated the Representation of the People Act (RPA). In the complaint filed on Thursday, it had also been alleged that Gambhir furnished false information while filing his nomination. The court will be hearing the pleas on May 1.

East Delhi, along with six other seats in the capital, will go to polls on May 12.
