When the makers of our Constitution made a provision under Article 324 to constitute the Election Commission then the India of today would not have been in their imagination. They wouldn't have had the faintest idea that this constitutional institution would gradually become governmental itself due to the government's domination in its members' appointment process. This is not just a matter of elections in Assam, Bengal or Tamil Nadu; the Election Commission has been losing the confidence of a large section of society for quite some time. How will the people's trust return, as was seen at the time of T.N. Seshan? Why not make constitutional amendments for the appointment process of Election Commissioners without delay?
