Major Fire Breaks out at Shoe Factory in Delhi, 6 Workers Feared Trapped
New Delhi: A big fire broke out at a shoe factory in Udyog Vihar in West Delhi’s Peeragarhi on Monday morning. As 31 fire tenders rushed to the spot, the police said five to six people are suspected to be trapped inside.
"We got a PCR call about a fire in a shoe factory in Udyog Nagar at 8.56 a.m. Twenty-four fire tenders are at the spot and 15 more vehicles have been called even as efforts are underway to bring the blaze under control," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Parvinder Singh told PTI..
No injuries have been reported in the incident so far, according to the police.
Delhi Fire Services chief Atul Garg told the Hindustan Times that the blaze was of ‘major category.’
“It’s a major category fire and the fire-fighting operation may continue till late evening. As far as casualties are concerned, we have not found any bodies. The factory owner is saying that six workers are missing. They may be trapped inside but we cannot confirm or deny it at this moment,” he said.
Delhi Fire Service officials said fire-fighting operations are underway and two CATS ambulances are also at the spot to attend to any emergencies.
The cause of the fire is not known yet, the police added.
In January 2020, too, there was a major fire in a factory in Peeragarhi’s Udyog Vihar, leading to the collapse of the building. A young fire-fighter had succumbed to injuries while 14 others were injured. That fire, too, had been reported in the wee hours,
Prior to that, in December 2019, over 40 people were killed in a massive fire in a factory in Delhi’s Anaj Mandi area, which was operating from a four-storeyed house. That fire, too, was reported in the wee hours. About 100 people were sleeping inside the fire when the fire broke out. The factory used to make luggage bags.
In August 2020, more than 43 people were killed and several injured when a blaze swept through a manufacturing factory in a four-storey building the capital’s Rani Jhansi Road. That blaze was also reported in the early hours of the day.
According to media reports, the four-storeyed building had a plastic toy manufacturing unit, a cardboard making unit, a garment workshop, a printing unit as also a jacket making unit.
