Acid Attack Survivors Continue to Suffer Ordeals
A week ago, a 17-year-old schoolgirl was attacked with acid while she was on her way to school in India’s capital, New Delhi. The accused had bought the acid from an online marketplace, Flipkart. Even after the Supreme Court banned over-the-counter acid sales in 2013, acid remains widely available in almost every other grocery shop. Despite the existence of laws and directives to curb the horrors of acid violence, acid attacks in India are on the rise. As per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, there were 102 acid attack cases in India in 2021. This report by NewsClick focuses on survivors of acid attacks to understand the impact of the crime on their lives.
