An army job is greatly valued by young men in India, because it provides immense financial security, pension and perks along with social status, respect and prestige. This is especially true in these times of extreme nationalism. The Agnipath scheme undermines those very aspirations, by removing the prospect of job security. It is a blow to hundreds of thousands of aspirants who undergo arduous physical training to prepare for a chance to join the army. That is the reason why the anger has boiled over onto the streets.
