Banana Farming: Not as Sweet as the Fruit

While all of us have eaten bananas, how many know of the difficulties faced by farmers in growing bananas? NewsClick takes a look at the situation. The state of Tamil Nadu ranks second in banana production in the country and is home to the fifth largest region under banana cultivation in the world. However, farmers here say that the blanket lockdown has caused them enormous sorrow. They criticise the Modi government for not giving any notice prior to the lockdown, and the state government for not setting a minimum support price for the fruit. They demand that the government should intervene and procurement should be based on weight, as is the case for other fruits and vegetables.
