In a huge victory for the year-long farmers’ movement across the country, the Narendra Modi government was forced to withdraw the three Central farm laws on Friday. The move comes ahead of the major action plans being planned by farmers collective, Samyukta Kisan Morcha, to mark one year of their struggle, and ahead of the UP and Punjab Assembly elections where the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government is facing flak for the Lakhimpur Kheri incident.

Recall how the farmers were prevented from entering Delhi to protest again the farm laws, they braved lathis, teargas, digging of roads, nails driven on roads and the vagaries of the weather -- the extreme heat, cold and rains.

But the spirit of the farmers refused to die down, even though they lost over 700 farmers, who became martyrs in this spectacular struggle that drew support from all sections of the society – workers, students, youth, teachers, civil society, women among others.

Sweets Distributed at Protest Cites

Sweets were being distributed on Friday morning by several people at farmers' protest sites near Delhi's border areas on a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government has decided to repeal the three farm laws said a PTI report.

The day of announcement, coincided with Guru Nanak Jayanti which marks the birth anniversary of the one of the most revered Sikh gurus.

From Ghazipur border of Delhi-Uttar Pradesh to Singhu border of Delhi-Haryana, people were seen distributions sweets, 'jalebis' at protest sites.

TV channels and news portals also aired visuals, showing men carrying sweets in baskets, and distributing it to people at protest sites.
