Bihar Govt Orders Probe Into Police Action Against Galwan Martyr’s Father

Patna: The Bihar government has ordered a probe into the arrest and alleged mishandling of the father of a soldier killed during the clash between the Army and Chinese troops in Galwan Valleyon June 15-16, 2020, after Opposition members protested in the Assembly on Wednesday.

According to reports, Rajkapoor Singh, the father of Jai Kishore Singh,was beaten and arrested by the local police over a land dispute in Jandaha, Vaishali.

Singh was charged under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after Dalit villagers accused him of encroaching upon government landand lodged a police complaint.

Singh was reportedly building a memorial for his son on the land of a Dalit identified as Hari Nath Ram and a portion of the government land.

CCTV footage shows the police dragging Singh away. His family alleged that the police beat him.

BJP MLAs disrupted the proceedings and demanded an explanation from the government and strict action against the police.Opposition members holding placards protestedboth inside and outside the Assembly. They also shouted slogans and trooped to the well, disrupted theproceedings and threw chairs meant for reporters despite Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary’sappeal to sit.

Angry BJP MLAs alleged that the state government had humiliated the father of a martyr and the local police booked him for alleged extortion and other Acts.

Soon after thethird day of the ongoing Budget Session resumed, Opposition members demanded a discussion. But the Speaker disallowed it.

Deputy chief minister (CM) Tehashwi Yadav expressed unhappiness over the Opposition’s unruly behaviour and said that the police acted as per the law. The police acted against Singhbased on a complaint that he had encroached a piece of land belonging to a Dalit and government land, he added.

However,after defence minister Rajnath Singh spoke with CM Nitish Kumar about the matter on Wednesday,the state government ordered a probe.

As per the official press release,a high-level team has been constituted to investigate the alleged misbehaviour with Singh. The Bihar Police headquarters said in a press release that a special police team would investigate the matter.
